Fatalities have climbed to 20, while the number of affected individuals has exceeded 654,000 due to widespread flooding and landslides caused by the combined effects of Super Typhoon Bavi and the enhanced southwest monsoon, according to the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) on Monday.
Sarangani recorded 10 deaths, followed by Lanao del Sur with six, Bukidnon with two, and one each in Iloilo and Davao Occidental, OCD deputy spokesperson Diego Agustin Mariano said, citing data as of 8:00 a.m.
The number of missing individuals stood at 16, with eight from Davao Occidental, five from Lanao del Sur, two from Sarangani, and one from Maguindanao del Sur.
Affected families have reached around 146,000, translating to over 654,000 individuals.
Of these, more than 20,100 families are taking shelter in 162 evacuation centers, while over 5,100 families are staying outside the centers.
Meanwhile, Super Typhoon Bavi, locally known as Inday, and the enhanced southwest monsoon have caused an estimated P3.18 million in damage to infrastructure.
Also, a total of 890 houses were damaged, including 277 that were totally destroyed and 613 that were partially damaged, the OCD said.
At least P43.38 million worth of assistance has already been provided to affected families.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) continues to warn that flash floods and landslides remain possible within the next 24 hours in Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon due to thunderstorms associated with the southwest monsoon, based on its 4:00 p.m. weather forecast.
The rest of the country is also expected to experience localized thunderstorms, which may trigger flooding and landslides during severe weather. — Edg Adrian A. Eva
