ALL BUT ONE of the Philippine women’s team seeing action in the World Chess OIympiad set on Sept. 15-27 in Samarkand, Uzbekistan will be on hand in the Philippine National Women’s Invitational Championships that opens on Tuesday until Sept. 8.
“It will be our final push for the Olympiad,” Janelle Mae Frayna, the country’s first and only Woman Grandmaster to date, told The STAR.
Ruelle Canino, Shania Mae Mendoza and Mhage Sebastian are also seeing action while Jan Jodilyn Fronda begged off in this 13-round tournament.
Also plunging into battle are Bernadette Galas, Jemaicah Yap Mendoza, Marie Antoinette San Diego, Jersey Marticio, Allaney Jia Doroy, Francois Marie Magpily, Cherry Ann Mejia, Kate Nicole Ordizo, Franchesca Largo and Diana Ramos.
Ms. Frayna and Ms. Canino, along with Ms. Fronda, campaigned in Europe for a few tournaments last month and should use their precious experience there when they seek a better finish in the Alicia tournament.
The Frayna-led National chessers are out to eclipse their Group B gold medal finish in the last Olympiad edition in Budapest two years ago.
Simultaneously staged were four other meets — the National Juniors, Children, Youth Selection and FIDE Classification tourneys. — Joey Villar
