Super Typhoon Champi to bring rain over three areas — PAGASA

The trough of Super Typhoon Champi (international name) is expected to bring rain over three areas, posing a risk of flooding and landslides, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Tuesday.

In its 4:00 a.m. weather advisory, PAGASA said scattered rains and thunderstorms are expected in Catanduanes, Northern Samar, and Eastern Samar due to Champi’s trough.

PAGASA warned of possible flooding and landslides during moderate to occasionally heavy rains.

Super Typhoon Champi was last located 1,605 kilometers east of Central Luzon as of 3:00 a.m. Its strength slightly intensified, packing maximum sustained winds of 195 kilometers per hour (kph) and gusts of up to 240 kph.

Champi is expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by Tuesday morning or early afternoon and will be given the domestic name Rosal, according to PAGASA’s 11:00 p.m. storm advisory. It will be the country’s 18th tropical cyclone this year.

PAGASA said Signal No. 2 and Signal No. 3 may be raised over the northern and eastern parts of Northern Luzon and the Bicol Region early Tuesday.

As for Champi’s forecast track, the super typhoon is likely to maintain its strength as it enters PAR and may further intensify as it moves over the Philippine Sea.

It is likely to weaken by Thursday and exit PAR by Saturday, PAGASA said. — Edg Adrian A. Eva
