KCC presents the National Orchestra of Korea
THE Korean Cultural Center (KCC) in the Philippines’ upcoming concert Korean Sound will be held on Aug. 15 at the BGC Arts Center in Taguig City. The special performance features the young artists of the National Orchestra of Korea’s Youth Educational Group. The concert aims to unite the enduring beauty of Korean traditional music with its evolution through contemporary artistry. 2 new exhibitions at MO_Space
THIS MONTH, the Main Gallery of MO_Space will present a couple of exhibits. An Exhibition With No Title, a curatorial project of Tony Godfrey, sees artists Nice Buenaventura, Edith Lawrence, and Guo-Liang Tan brought together to blend post-conceptual and post-Cubist works. Meanwhile, Gallery 2 will have Teach Us to Outgrow Our Madness by Neo Maestro, whose art is set to reopen old wounds. Both exhibits will be open to public viewing at MO_Space from Aug. 15 to Sept. 13.
OFY mounts fundraising concert
THE Orchestra of the Filipino Youth (OFY) will have a major fundraising concert, Music for a Regenerative Future, on Aug. 16, at The Proscenium Theater at Rockwell, Makati City. The concert is a celebration of nature, sustainability, and the shared responsibility to protect and regenerate the world we live in. Under the baton of Gerard Salonga, its repertoire is orchestral music inspired by the natural world, opening with Antonino Buenaventura’s By the Hillside, a nostalgic portrait of the Philippine countryside, followed by Takashi Yoshimatsu’s And Birds Are Still..., a contemplative work inspired by birdsong and the resilience of nature. The featured soloist is Daniel Asis, a 16-year-old pianist, who will perform George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. The evening will culminate with Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 in F Major, Pastoral, a tribute to the beauty, serenity, and restorative power of the countryside. NCCA opens ASEAN Cultural Center in Manila
THE National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) has opened the ASEAN Cultural Center in Manila at the Metropolitan Theater. Designed as a regional cultural hub, it seeks to deepen ties among ASEAN Member States and dialogue partners through knowledge-sharing, joint programs, and cultural policies. It also aims to promote culture and the arts as forces for economic growth, peace, and regional stability. Entry is free and open to the public.
The M offers mini Japanese tapestry workshop
THE Metropolitan Museum of Manila in BGC will host a one-day workshop about tenugui, which are Japanese cloths filled with patterns. Participants will learn how they are dyed, then celebrate local culture by adding Filipino flair to their own creations. Using pabalat paper-cut stencils, participants can make mini screenprinted tenugui to take home, plus sweet pastillas wrapped in a real pabalat design. The workshop is set for Aug. 22, from 2 to 4 p.m., at the museum’s M Art Studio at the third floor. Interested parties can register via The M’s website and social media pages.
Young singers join Sing Philippines Youth Choir
THE Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) and the Andrea O. Veneracion (AOV) Sing Philippines Foundation will bring together 35 singers from different parts of the country for a week-long music camp at the CCP Tanghalang Ignacio B. Gimenez in Pasay City. From Aug. 19 to 23, the young singers of the 5th batch of the Sing Philippines Youth Choir will undergo an intensive music camp to learn advanced vocal techniques, refine ensemble mastery, and build friendships under the guidance of the Philippine Madrigal Singers choirmaster-conductor Mark Anthony Carpio. It will culminate with a performance in the 25th anniversary celebration concert honoring Mr. Carpio at the Newport Performing Arts Theater on Aug. 22 and 23.
Marco Santos exhibits at Yuchengco Museum
THE exhibition Art-in-Progress by Marco Y. Santos is on view until Aug. 29 at the Yuchengco Museum. It traces the unfolding practice of Mr. Santos through works shaped by reflection, experimentation, and continuous transformation. Structured in chapters, the exhibit aims to reveal different ways of approaching form, absence, emotion, and expression. As a self-taught artist, Mr. Santos’ torched works push the boundaries of medium and experimentation. The show is on the 3rd floor Bridgeway Gallery of Yuchengco Museum at the RCBC Plaza, Ayala corner Gil Puyat Aves., Makati.
Museo del Galeón offers nighttime experience
THE Museo del Galeón will hold an after-hours event, “Setting Sail: Monsoon Evening” on Aug. 29, with curated cocktails, maritime stories, and a history trivia night. Guest speaker chef Datu Shariff Pendatun III will guide guests through three cocktail stations, sharing the stories and cultural significance behind the featured ingredients and their connections to precolonial maritime exchange. Then, maritime history knowledge will be put to the test before boarding the Galeón EspÃritu Santo. The program runs from 7:30 to 10 p.m. on Aug. 29 at Museo del Galéon in SM Mall of Asia, Pasay City. Tickets, priced at P3,200, are available through the QR registration on the museum’s social media pages. Admission is for guests 18 years old and above only, inclusive of a take-home cocktail-mixing kit.
Dance based on Kenkoy to be staged at Arete
ARETE, in partnership with Alice Reyes Dance Philippines, will be navigating pop culture, digital trends, and identity in this fast-changing world through dance. The production Kenkoy is inspired by Tony Velasquez’s komiks character Kenkoy. It will be directed and choreographed by Ronelson Yadao, with music by Krina Cayabyab, libretto by Guelan Luarca, dramaturgy by Jerry Respeto, and production and lighting design by D’Cortezano. Tickets will be available online soon. Kenkoy will run from Sept. 18 to 20 and Sept. 25 to 26 at the Hyundai Hall in Arete, Ateneo de Manila University, Quezon City.
Juvenal Sansó honored in National Museum exhibit
THE exhibition Sansó: Pusong Pilipino is now open at the National Museum of Fine Arts. It serves a welcome home for the late Spanish artist who settled in the Philippines and acknowledges his role in the country’s art scene. The retrospective is free to the public and is located at Gallery XV of the National Museum of Fine Arts in Manila in Luneta, Manila. It runs until Feb. 28, 2027.
GMG staging Cirque Alice, The Play That Goes Wrong
GMG PRODUCTIONS has announced its upcoming season at The Theatre at Solaire, bringing two internationally acclaimed productions to Manila in October and November. From gravity-defying artistry to spectacular chaos, Cirque Alice and The Play That Goes Wrong promise two completely different live entertainment experiences. The first, set for Oct. 16-25, is inspired by Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and combines acrobatics, aerial performances, visual effects, and live performers. Meanwhile, the Olivier and Tony Award-winning production The Play That Goes Wrong runs from Nov. 6 to 22.
